One question we get asked is: “How differently do women need to train than men” and the answer to that question is, well, a little differently.
We’re made very similar but also very differently.
If you go into a health centre or fitness club then you’ll commonly see more women in the cardio areas and more men in the weights areas.
It has changed over the last couple of years, with a shift of more women taking up weight and not going along the historical view of lifting weights will make you bulky (it doesn’t).
In fact, Hayley wrote on the MPT blog about why women should be lifting weights in the gym and how doing so will help them get the body they desire in life.
The clear fact and evidence behind things is that, yes, women do need to train differently to men, but not completely differently.
Women can out train a guy if we’re talking about progression and staying power. That’s been evidence many times.
What men can do is generally bulk up quicker (because they want to) and then lift heavier at an earlier stage, but that’s generally down to men actively wanting and seeking to become muscly and bigger in the early stages.
If you’re looking for a local personal trainer for women then we’ve got some of the best ones in the local East Lancashire area. Our male trainers do train with women and understand that whether it’s female fat loss or just becoming more confident when you look in the mirror that you want a different approach to the guys.
Because our personal training programmes encompass more than the usual “just fitness sessions”, we’ll advise you how to keep up with the guys in the kitchen without the need to eat steak for breakfast or a pre-workout shake or any of those menly things to do. Post workout protein shakes are good to take, but we also want to ensure that we get enough of the right nutrition and that we recover adequately as well.
It isn’t about becoming bulky, but if your goal is to burn those wobbly bits off your body then it’s sensible to pick up the dumbbell in the gym rather than do some low intensity cardio like walking on the treadmill or using the cross trainer at a low intensity while talking to your gym buddy.
So, women do need to train differently to men but we also need to think differently too.
Which means understanding that weight loss, fitness and having a toned physique is about understanding what the men do in their lives and understanding how the actions and nutrition that they consume can be adapted to how we live our lives too.
